Syria: Russian forces open a new point opposite the separation zone in the Golan heights
The Russian flag was raised at a new observation point opposite the disengagement zone between the Syrian and Israeli armies in the Golan Heights in southern Syria.
The raising of the Russian flag marks the opening of the eighth observation point of its kind in the region for Russian forces operating in Syria, which aims to protect the region from any potential breaches, amidst severe tension in the complex conflict zones in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Israel.
The new Russian observation point is located above the Tel Ahmar site, along the “Bravo” line that defines the eastern bank of the separation zone between the Syrian and Israeli armies.
This zone, which was established in accordance with the United Nations resolution issued in 1974 following the end of the October War in 1973, is concerned with determining the locations of the Syrian and Israeli armies on both sides of the buffer zone.
In a special statement, the deputy commander of the Russian forces operating in Syria, General Alexander Rodionov, said, “Today we opened a point belonging to the Russian forces along the separation of forces strip in the Quneitra region in southern Syria, within the framework of the agreements to maintain non-violation of the UN disengagement zone”.
The deputy commander of the Russian forces operating in Syria added, “With this new point, we have opened eight observation points in order to complete the operation and maintain the security and peace of Syrian territory from any violations”.
He explained that the forces tasked with completing this operation are the tank battalion of the Russian military police, based on the orders of the general commander of the Russian forces in Syria.
The deputy commander of the Russian forces operating in Syria confirmed that the Russian military crews are present in their designated locations at the observation points along the UN line for disengagement between the Syrian and Israeli armies, and that there is no withdrawal from them as is rumored in the media.
He added, “We’re still present, and we are carrying out all our tasks along the Bravo line”.
An additional Russian military police point will be deployed in the Golan Heights as part of the mission to monitor the situation on the Bravo Line in the buffer zone between the armed forces of Israel and the Syrian Arab Republic… The ceasefire between the conflicting parties is monitored.
The Russian observation posts, which take the form of a parallel fence to the UN buffer zone in the Golan Heights where the UN Disengagement Observation Force (UNDOF) is deployed, play a vital role in the lives of civilians and their stability in their areas and villages, especially in light of the fears spread by some media outlets about Israeli intentions to invade southern Syria through the demilitarized zone (Bravo and Alpha), which separates the villages occupied by Israel in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights from the liberated villages and towns.
It’s worth noting that the first 7 points were opened by Russia during the past two years.
