South Africa will present evidence to the International Justice that Israel committed genocide in Palestine
South Africa has announced its intention to submit a memorandum to the International Court of Justice next month, containing evidence proving that Israel has committed the crime of genocide against the Palestinians.
This was reported by the South African presidency in a statement published on its website on Tuesday evening.
“South Africa will submit its memorandum to the International Court of Justice in October 2024,” the South African presidency said.
The presidency added, “South Africa intends to present facts and evidence to prove that Israel is committing the crime of genocide in Palestine”.
The South African presidency confirmed that this case will continue until the court issues its ruling.
The presidency expressed her hope that Israel will abide by the interim orders issued by the court so far, while the case progresses, pointing out that the issue represents a growing global effort towards ensuring peace in the Middle East.
The South African presidency also stated that several countries, including Nicaragua, Palestine, Türkiye, Spain, Mexico, Libya and Colombia, have joined the case filed by South Africa against Israel”.
In late December 2023, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the International Court of Justice on the grounds that it had violated the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention of Genocide.
It requested the International Court of Justice to decide on precautionary measures in view of the seriousness of the situation in Gaza, and hearings on the request for precautionary measures were held in The Hague on January 11 and 12.
