German President: The Upcoming Bundestag elections will take place in September 2025
The German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier officially announced on Friday, the timetable for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Steinmeier said that nationwide elections will be held in Germany on September 28, 2025.
The elections will determine the number of seats in the lower house of the German Bundestag, and could change the balance of power in German politics.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party coalition government is seeking to improve its poll numbers, and Steinmeier’s choice of the date came after a cabinet recommendation in July.
It’s noteworthy that German law stipulates that elections must be held on Sunday or a public holiday, and the constitution requires that parliamentary elections be held no later than 46 months after the start of the electoral period and no later than 48 months after its start.
This condition means that the 2025 Bundestag elections must take place between 27 August and 26 October.
There will be fewer seats up for grabs in the Bundestag in the next election.
Complex provisions in German electoral law mean there is no fixed number of seats in the Bundestag, and the last national election results in 2021 saw the chamber increase to 733 members, however, MPs have since approved an electoral reform, backed by Scholz’s coalition, that will cap the number of Bundestag seats at 630.
