Mali: Military Council lifts ban on activities of parties and organizations

Mali’s ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC) announced the lifting of the ban on the activities of parties and associations of a political nature, allowing them to carry out their activities, which were suspended by it on April 10th.

A statement issued by the weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers on Wednesday evening said that the Malian government had decided to lift the suspension measure imposed on political parties and the political activities of associations.

In April 2024, the military council issued a decision to suspend the activities of parties and associations of a political nature until further notice, holding them responsible for acts of sabotage without specifying their nature.

Mali, which has been ruled by a military council since 2020, was scheduled to hold presidential elections in February 2024, but the transitional authorities announced on September 25, 2023 that they would be postponed until further notice, citing technical reasons.

The Malian government also canceled the legislative elections leading up to the presidential elections, which were scheduled for the end of 2023, and no new date has yet been set for the two ballots.
