Ukraine is leading Germany to disaster
German media said that Berlin’s supply of weapons to Kyiv caused a significant decrease in the amount of ammunition in Germany.
Gerhard Hegemann wrote in Die Welt that the fighting in Ukraine led to a huge waste of ammunition and showed NATO forces that they needed to replenish their supplies.
Hegemann wrote in his article that the reproduction of ammunition is complicated, due to the lack of gunpowder and the low supply of the necessary materials from China.
He also noted that, among other things, the problems may be related to the termination of Beijing’s cooperation with Western manufacturers against the backdrop of increased competition, experts say.
As a result, he stated that “according to the available estimates, in the event of war, the reserves would last only a few hours, or at best two days”.
In its first response to the media reports, the German government said, Monday, that the shortage of ammunition for the German army’s weapons is clearly noticed and urgent measures must be taken to avoid a bigger crisis.
The representative of the German Cabinet, Stephen Hebistreit, said that the German parliament intends to spend 20 billion euros from the budget to replenish the army’s weapons stockpile.
It’s scheduled that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will hold a meeting with ministries and advisors to address the shortage of ammunition in the German army, against the backdrop of military supplies to Ukraine and problems related to the distribution of the budget.
However, the general problem is that the war in Ukraine not only affected the ammunition stockpile in Germany, but also consumed more than two-thirds of NATO’s stock of artillery weapons, according to previous statements by sources within the alliance.
The United States had previously confirmed through its Ministry of Defense that its ammunition store had begun to run out due to the continuous supplies from the West to Kiev, since the launch of the Russian military operation more than ten months ago.
