News from Damascus, indicating that a Saudi delegation headed by the head of the intelligence service, Lieutenant General Khaled al Humaidan, visited the Syrian capital on Monday, and met Syrian President Bashar al Assad and Vice President for Security Affairs, Major General Ali Mamlouk, and it was agreed that the delegation would return for a long visit After the Eid al Fitr.

High ranked diplomatic sources in the Syrian capital, said that an agreement was reached to reopen the Saudi embassy in Damascus, as a first step to restore relations in all fields between the two countries.

The sources indicated that the Saudi delegation informed its Syrian hosts that its country welcomes Syria’s return to the Arab League, and the attendance of the next Arab summit conference in Algeria.

This détente in the Syrian-Saudi relations comes after a secret Saudi-Iranian meeting in the Iraqi capital Baghdad two weeks ago, and the Saudi Crown Prince’s affirmation in a TV interview that his country is keen to establish strong relations with Iran, and said that he wishes it as a neighboring country all prosperity.

The Saudi-Syrian dispute was centered around Syria’s strong and strategic relationship with Iran, but now, after the Saudi-Iranian meeting in Baghdad, and confirmation of the possibilities that the Vienna talks would revive the Iranian nuclear agreement and lift the US sanctions on Iran, Saudi accounts have changed completely, and its leadership is seeking to improve its relations with The Iranian-Syrian axis and the normalization of relations between Tehran and Riyadh, which will facilitate reaching a Saudi exit from the Yemeni crisis as soon as possible.

It is reported that the Saudi authorities completely froze their relations with the Syrian opposition and the High Negotiations Committee, which was based in Riyadh, and closed its official headquarters.

Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in his meeting on the Saudi official TV, was focusing on the Arab psyche, the Arab interest, and the fight against Islamic extremism, a conciliatory tone that caught the attention of many observers.
