Yedioth Ahronoth: Communication breakdown between Sinwar and the Hamas leadership abroad

The Israeli Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper said, Thursday, that contact between the head of the Hamas political bureau in the Gaza Strip, Yahya Sinwar, had been cut off with the Hamas leadership abroad.

Yedioth Ahronoth reported, that contact between Sinwar and the Hamas leadership abroad had been cut off several days ago, and that the Hamas leader in Gaza was moving from one place to another and from one tunnel to the next, without knowing his location.

In the same context, US media reported, Thursday, that Israeli officials proposed removing the leader of the Hamas movement, Yahya Sinwar, and other leaders from the Gaza Strip, in exchange for the release of all Israeli detainees in the Strip.

The idea of sending Sinwar, Deif and four other senior Hamas leaders into exile, similar to the departure of the late President Yasser Arafat and the Palestine Liberation Organization from Beirut to Tunisia on a ship 42 years ago, was actually discussed last January.

Israel had previously announced its pledge to eliminate Hamas, and in particular to eliminate Sinwar and the leader of Hamas armed wing, Muhammad Deif, but Israel may have been convinced to change its position due to the long period of the war and the lack of a clear horizon for its end.

Sources within the Israeli government reported that exile was one of a set of proposals that the Israelis put forward to the United States during the discussions, which included replacing Hamas in Gaza with carefully selected civilian leaders, along with “reforming the education system in Gaza,” according to the Israeli desire.

The Israeli army has continued his war against the Gaza Strip, since last October 7, which resulted so far in more than 27,000 Palestinians dead and more than 66,000 wounded among the residents of the Strip.
