The Wall Street Journal, published an editorial entitled “Trump’s New Timeline for Putin”.

The Wall Street Journal noted that President Trump appears to have finally realized that the Russians don’t want a ceasefire.

It noted a statement Trump made to reporters in Scotland on Monday, stating that he would give his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, an additional 10 to 12 days to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine.

The Wall Street Journal said that no one could say that Trump was impatient with the Russian “dictator,” noting that he last gave Putin 50 days to reach an agreement or face sanctions.

“But Putin has shown no sign of abandoning his goal of the war — to make Ukraine a de facto Russian colony,” according to the Wall Street Journal.

Trump said, according to the Wall Street Journal, that he believed he had reached an agreement with the Russian president on more than one occasion, but the latter “would return to bombing cities with missiles, which in turn left bodies in the streets”.

The US president added that “in the absence of progress, he may impose tariffs on Russia or impose secondary sanctions on countries that buy Russian oil or gas”.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Trump already has a ready bill in the Senate that would impose secondary tariffs of 500%, which would deal a particularly severe blow to China and India.

The Wall Street Journal noted that in the face of this threat, Putin may resort to declaring his desire for peace again, but without a ceasefire, and that any promises made by the Russian president will be worthless.
