Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stressed that Syria’s stability is a regional imperative that cannot be ignored, warning that Israeli attacks pose a direct threat to the country’s security.

In a press conference following the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Antalya, Fidan stressed that the security of Syrians, including the Druze, is the responsibility of the Syrian government, calling for a comprehensive settlement that includes all components of the Syrian people.

Fidan also indicated Türkiye’s support for the protocol signed between the Syria Democratic Forces, SDF and the Syrian government, emphasizing the need to dismantle the military structures of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and hand over their weapons to the New Syrian army.

He emphasized that Ankara awaits the implementation of these steps by the Kurdish units.

The Turkish minister also touched on the US sanctions imposed on Syria, noting that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had previously called on his former US counterpart, Donald Trump, to lift them, which clearly influenced the US decision at the time.
