US President Donald Trump on Tuesday vowed Iran that it would wipe out “from the face of the earth” if it succeeded in assassinating him.

In a sharp flurry of threats, both Iran and the United States have vowed to wage a full-scale war if the leader of either country is assassinated.

In an interview with News Nation broadcast Tuesday, Trump said in response to a question about Iran’s threat to his life: “I was given very strict instructions… If anything happens, they will wipe them off the face of the earth”.

Earlier on Tuesday, in response to any threats against Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the spokesman for the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Gen. Abolfazl Shekarji, said that Trump knew in advance that Tehran wouldn’t hesitate to respond.

“Trump knows that if the hand of aggression extends to our leader, we won’t be satisfied with cutting off that hand, and this is not just a slogan,” Shakarji was quoted as saying to Iranian state media.

“We’ll set their world on fire and we won’t leave them a safe haven in the region,” he said.

Trump issued a similar warning to Iran a year ago, shortly after returning to the White House, when he told reporters, “If they do, they will be wiped out”.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the toughest and most direct threat yet to the United States, warning that his country would respond with everything it has if it’s attacked again.

In an op-ed published by the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, Araghchi said that the violent phase of unrest (referring to the protests that swept Iran) lasted less than 72 hours.

He also recalled Israel’s 12-day war on Iran last June, saying, “Contrary to the restraint shown by Tehran in June, our strong-armed forces have no hesitation in responding with all they have if we are subjected to a renewed attack”.

“This isn’t a threat, but a reality that must be clearly conveyed, because as a diplomat and veteran, I abhor war,” he said.

He also stressed that “any all-out confrontation will certainly be fierce and will last much longer than the fanciful timelines that Israel and its proxies are trying to promote to the White House”.

He stressed that the war “will sweep the entire region, and it will have an impact on ordinary people around the world”.

Araghchi, whose invitation to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos was withdrawn due to protest repression in his country, came as a US aircraft carrier group is moving west toward the Middle East from Asia.

Other US fighter jets and equipment are also moving in the Middle East after a large-scale US military deployment in the Caribbean, following the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by US forces earlier this month.

Iran remains reeling from the aftermath of some of the biggest anti-government protests since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization (Iran Human Rights) reported that the death toll from the crackdown remains difficult due to communications restrictions.

It said on Monday that available data indicates that the number of protesters killed may exceed even the highest media estimates, which amounts to about 20,000 dead.

Iranians began mass demonstrations in December to demand an alleviation of their economic woes, after the value of the national currency plunged to its lowest level under the leadership of Ali Khamenei, who has rejected democratic reforms for decades.
