The Washington Post: What is the EU fears the most if Donald Trump returned to the White House
The Washington Post reported, citing European Union officials, that the EU countries are preparing to deal with any possible change in US military support for Ukraine if Donald Trump wins the upcoming presidential election.
The Washington Post reported that the United States’ allies in Europe are planning for the possibility of a strain in transatlantic relations if Trump wins the upcoming elections.
In preparation for any possible change in the White House’s policies toward Ukraine, European officials are seeking to accelerate the approval of military aid packages for Kiev before the November elections.
NATO has also taken over some of the tasks that were previously the Pentagon’s responsibility in coordinating military support for Ukraine.
In this context, the German Bundestag member, Thomas Erndl, pointed out that Europe must take greater responsibility for its security, stressing that the current US President, Joe Biden, may be the last president to adopt the traditional approach to transatlantic relations.
The Washington Post added that European officials are aware that losing US military support could be a severe blow to the European Union.
According to reports, the EU has drawn up plans to prepare retaliatory trade tariffs if Trump decides to reimpose tariffs on EU products.
The European Union is working on developing a trade strategy to deal with any potential return of Trump to the White House, including imposing heavy tariffs on American imports if negotiations to improve trade between the two sides fail.
It’s worth noting that Donald Trump has pledged in previous statements that he is able to reach a negotiated solution to the Ukrainian conflict, repeatedly stressing that he can end the conflict within one day.
