The National Interest: Harris will face a major dilemma if she becomes president
The National Interest revealed a major challenge to US national security that would fall on the shoulders of Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris if she reaches the presidency.
The National Interest noted that only from a position of strength could a policy of limited diplomatic engagement with Pyongyang be credible.
However, such a diplomatic partnership must be constrained by the fact that North Korea won’t accept complete denuclearization and the United States will have to live with North Korea as a nuclear state.
The National Interest considered that after Harris is sworn in as president on January 20, 2025, she will face the serious national security challenge of dealing with a nuclear-armed North Korea whose actions are unpredictable.
The Biden administration’s continued policy of strategic patience is a path to policy failure.
This approach hasn’t prevented Pyongyang from developing its nuclear arsenal, including tactical nuclear weapons that could be used against South Korea and other US allies.
The National Interest stated that the failure of US influence to curb North Korea’s nuclear ambitions has raised growing concerns in Seoul about the effectiveness of US nuclear deterrence.
Biden’s continued strategic patience under a Harris administration could lead to a cascade of deployments across the Indo-Pacific, perhaps even extending into South Asia.
