The Jerusalem Post said in an article by Amotz Asa-El, “Netanyahu’s government is collapsing and coming to an end”.

Asa-El compares what is happening in Israel to the demonstrations against the 1969 Vietnam War, where the United States witnessed mass demonstrations and mass protests against the Vietnam War.

Wartime protests are now rocking Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and as police attack protesters with increasing violence, the question arises: Is there any similarity between the American past and the Israeli present?

He replies that with regard to the war there is no comparison at all, but in terms of the energy of the protests and their proximity to their goal, there is certainly similarity.

The most obvious difference between the Vietnam-era US protests and the current protests in Israel is that Israel’s protests aren’t against war, Israel’s war is against our immediate neighbors who have viciously attacked us.

The dilemma for protesters in Israel lies not in their opposition to the war but in their fear that the protests will get in the way of war.

He says the protesters are demanding the dismissal of the government, which protesters fear could affect the ongoing war.

Netanyahu’s protests are the beginning of a long-awaited rebellion, fueled by the same energy of street protests: the conviction that this war is linked to his corrupt establishment and the era that produced it.

Vietnam came as a shock in America for many reasons, but the main reason was a distorted conscription system that favored privileged and offended the rest.

Netanyahu’s recruitment system is worse, he says, and that’s what Likud dissidents now understand, and what their leader will never give up, which will eventually lead to his downfall.

Likud defectors say what protesters are saying in the streets: Israel needs a fresh start.
