Politico: Democrats in the US Senate call for new leadership in Israel
Politico reported that Democratic members of the US Senate are calling for new leadership in Israel, sparking more negative reactions against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Even when they didn’t directly demand his resignation, they stressed that he mismanaged the war against Hamas after October 7, speaking of the occurrence of major problems under his term.
The comments reported by Politico, which include both lawmakers who are typically critical of Israeli rule and others who are more conservative, show the extent to which Democrats’ faith in Netanyahu has eroded, even as President Joe Biden and the White House continue to tread carefully.
In this regard, Senator Debbie Stabenow (Democrat from Michigan), who, according to Politico, is ranked as the No. 3 Democrat in the Senate, said, “I look forward to the time when the Israeli prime minister doesn’t return,” adding that Netanyahu’s leadership isn’t what is needed now.
For his part, Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed (Democrat of Rhode Island) stated that “Netanyahu’s term allowed Hamas to collect weapons, and that his pursuit of judicial amendments and the looming personal corruption cases hindered his ability to govern”.
In turn, Senator Chris Van Hollen (Democrat from Maryland), who proposed an amendment to the conditions of aid provided to Israel, confirmed that Netanyahu puts his political interests before other goals.
The results of an opinion poll conducted by the Gallup organization showed that Netanyahu’s image in the United States is the most negative in the country so far.
According to the poll, 36% of Americans believe that Israel receives a lot of US support.
Despite the unending military support for Israel, the differences between US President Joe Biden and Netanyahu are expanding against the backdrop of differences in opinions regarding dealing with the war, the prisoner deal, and the next day of the war.
