The New York Post reported that one of President Donald Trump’s reservations about a potential US attack on Iran is that the country could become “the next Libya” if Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is “overthrown”.

President Trump’s reservations about getting involved in the conflict that began with Israeli attacks on Iran, citing sources close to the Trump administration.

The New York Post quoted three figures close to the US administration as saying that Trump recently specifically referred to the issue of “oil-rich Libya’s descent into a decade of chaos in 2011”.

They noted that the president’s reluctance to attack Iran stems from his concern about the creation of a “new Libya” if Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei eleminated.

The New York Post also quoted a person familiar with the administration’s discussions about the possibility of Washington joining Israeli strikes against Iran’s nuclear program as saying that Trump doesn’t want “Iran to turn into Libya”.

Another source, according to New York Post, said that he heard Trump say in a private session that he was concerned that Iran would become “like Libya” before Israel began its airstrikes on Iran.

The source close to the administration explained that potential regime change in Iran isn’t among Trump’s goals, saying, “As for the president, he won’t interfere in who will rule Iran,” according to New York Post newspaper.

In turn, a person close to the White House said that if the United States uses “bunker-buster bombers” against Iranian nuclear facilities, they will continue to deal with Iran’s response, expressing concern about nuclear contamination or that Iran might “respond through terrorism”.

He confirmed that Trump preferred to reach an agreement instead.
