National Interest: Putin’s statement on the Yassin-M is an ominous message to Washington

The National Interest magazine expressed its belief that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement regarding the Yasen-M submarines was a terrifying ominous message for the United States.
The American magazine stated, “What’s even more alarming for the United States is that the Russian Navy may purchase more of these high-performance, efficient submarines next year… During his visit to the Russian naval base in Severodvinsk on Thursday, Putin called for the continuation of serial production of Yasen-M nuclear submarines”.
According to the magazine, the Russian president noted that such submarines form the backbone of the naval forces’ strike capabilities and are equipped with high-precision weapons and modern navigation and communications equipment, as well as state-of-the-art hydroacoustic equipment.
During the above-mentioned visit, President Putin stated that the construction of strategic missile submarines is a priority for Russia, given their role in maintaining the global balance of power.
The Russian President ordered the continuation of production of the Yasen-M multi-mission submarines and the acceleration of construction of more of them.
Putin added that this type of submarine “is one of the essential components of the nuclear triad, which enables Russia to maintain the balance of power in the world”.
The Project 885M Yasen-M multipurpose nuclear submarines are an upgraded version of the Project 885.
The Russian Navy currently operates one Project 885 and two Type 885M submarines.
Six additional upgraded Yasen-class submarines are in various stages of construction.
President Putin announced that the Russian naval nuclear forces will be reinforced in the coming years with four additional Borei-A submarines, two of which are already under construction.
These submarines will be equipped with Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles.
