Moscow leasing the Syrian port of Tartous for 49 years for economic purposes

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said Saturday that his country will lease Tartous port in Syria next week for 49 years.

“The port will be used for economic and logistical purposes”, Borisov told reporters after meeting with the Syrian President Bashar Al Assad.

“The main issue that must give a positive dynamic is the use of Tartous port”, Borisov said.

The visit brought together all these agreements.

We’ve done very well in this matter and we hope that the contract will be signed within a week, and for 49 years the port of Tartous will be operational in front of Russian business operations”.

Russia and Syria signed in 2017 an agreement on the establishment of a logistics center for the technical equipment of the Russian fleet in Tartus for 49 years.

“This move will have positive returns on the Syrian economy in the framework of moving it out of the movement of stalemate, which is living because of the embargo imposed by the United States and Europe to Syria for eight years”.

The leasing of this port to Russia would open a good window for business with Russia and the world, especially the European countries on the Mediterranean Sea, and the movement of ships in this port will increase bilateral trade between Syria and the world through Russia.
