Kyiv faces a harsh reality… between the fracturing of the European alliance and Washington’s pressure to reach a peace agreement with Moscow

After the failure of some European countries to issue a collective decision at the last summit at the level of the European Union to confiscate frozen Russian funds opened the door for more political effects, as repercussions and consequences on several European countries will occur in the later stage.

This explains the state of anger and discomfort in which Ukrainian President Zelensky appeared to object to European positions and even implicitly accuse the Europeans of cowardice and betrayal of Ukraine.

Last Sunday, Zelensky also interpreted French President Emmanuel Macron’s soft comments regarding the need for understanding and negotiation with Russia.

The behind-the-scenes debates between European envoys, presidents and officials appear to have been sharp in many details.

The Belgian position in particular has made a significant contribution to preventing European countries from taking a decision that would lead to the announcement of the confiscation of Russian funds to finance and support the Ukrainian army.

The alternative channel, which is to borrow again with large financial values, was chosen to finance the arming of Ukraine in the name of solidarity with its self-defense.

In this sense, European hesitation contributed to the production of an objective reality that prevented the German scenario, which for a moment thought of the possibility of taking a decision under the collective cover of Europe to confiscate Russian funds and pay for American weapons and ammunition to Ukraine from them.

But what it looks like is known only to veteran diplomats that the US administration under Donald Trump has denied European countries the provision of this provision.

In fact, it intervened strongly and pushed behind the curtains on the grounds that this could expand the scope of the war and could lead to a new third world war and long-term unrest, contrary to the fact that any European decision in the opinion of the Americans to confiscate Russian funds would expand the scope of the conflict and undermine the mediation and peace process currently being carried out by US President Donald Trump.

This implies that the American side didn’t support the option and allied with some countries that have concerns, led by Belgium, including France, which had observations on the legal and political bases of the confiscation of funds.

In fact, European figures in closed meetings called for measuring, understanding and anticipating Russian reactions in the event of crossing the principle of confiscation of funds to arm Ukraine.

But European countries have considered the validity of the freeze on Russian funds to be minimal in demonstrating their political stance that is very opposed to possible Russian aggression.

What is clear to observers is that the German scenario, which was a little hard-lined, was slackened behind the curtains and behind the scenes, which probably angered the Ukrainian president, while most importantly, noting that Europe is tired and fragmented and may not return to united after the recent Brussels vote, despite the presence of cracks.
