Discussions and preparations are underway for the possibility of Shell returning to Syria

The Syrian Ministry of Energy discussed with representatives of the British company Shell the possibility of the company resuming operations in the Syrian oil sector after a years-long hiatus due to the security and economic conditions facing the country.
The two sides discussed potential cooperation in oil production and infrastructure development, as well as investment opportunities and the rehabilitation of damaged oil sites and facilities.
The Syrian Ministry of Energy emphasized that the meeting comes within the framework of the government’s plan to attract experienced international companies with the aim of revitalizing the oil sector and boosting local production.
This move comes at a time when international relations with Syria are beginning to witness a significant shift.
The United Kingdom recently restored diplomatic relations with Damascus, in a move described as pivotal, following the visit of British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, the first of its kind in more than 14 years.
Last March, London removed the Central Bank of Syria and 23 other institutions, including energy companies, banks, and Syrian Airlines, from its sanctions list, opening the door for these entities to conduct business without restrictions on assets or financial transactions.
These developments point to a gradual shift in the investment climate within Syria, potentially opening up new opportunities to restart major projects in the oil and energy sector.
