US President Joe Biden on Saturday reiterated that he doesn’t plan to send US troops to Ukraine, noting the leadership of the United States globally, in an implicit response to his Republican opponent Donald Trump, whom he accused of being weak.

In a speech to graduates of West Point Military College in upstate New York, the president said, “There are no American soldiers fighting the war in Ukraine… I am determined that this will be the case, but we stand firmly by Ukraine, and we will remain by it”.

Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin, described by the White House master as a “brutal tyrant,” was “confident that NATO would collapse” after the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but that “on the contrary, the world’s largest defense alliance is stronger than ever”.

The United States has resumed military aid to Ukraine after being halted for months due to internal political wrangling in the United States, amid a Russian offensive in Kharkov in northeastern Ukraine.

Biden on Saturday praised the role played by the United States in the Middle East, citing engaging in emergency diplomacy to seek a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the release of hostages held by the Palestinian factions in Gaza since an attack on October 7, and also to thwart an unprecedented attack by Iran against the Israel on April 13.

“Thanks to the US armed forces, we are doing what only the United States is able to do as an indispensable nation and the world’s only superpower,” he said.

The president is campaigning for a second term in November, urging the new graduates to respect their oath of allegiance not to a political party, not to a president, but to the Constitution of the United States, in the face of all external and internal enemies, speaking of guardians of American democracy.

The Democratic president, who is campaigning warning of a threat to American democracy posed by his opponent Donald Trump, stressed that freedom isn’t free, it requires constant vigilance.
