Axios: US denies Trump’s commitment to Netanyahu to disarm Hamas within 60 days
US officials have denied claims by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that President Trump committed to a 60-day deadline during their last meeting to disarm Hamas, with the possibility of Israel resuming the war.
US officials confirmed, according to a report by Axios website, that the disarmament process will take much longer than 60 days, noting that the focus in the next 60 days will be on starting only the initial process.
Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law and adviser, presented a 100-day plan at the World Economic Forum in Davos, focusing on the initial comprehensive disarmament of Hamas’s heavy weapons, tunnels and military installations, with conditions such as destroying and not rebuilding terrorist infrastructure.
The plan includes granting amnesty to Hamas members who give up their weapons, and possible joining new security forces under international supervision, with a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces in exchange for progress in disarmament, with the process overseen by independent international monitors.
Trump expressed his conviction that Hamas would give up its weapons, while warning that failure to do so would lead to its demise.
Meanwhile, the White House plans to hold a meeting of Peace Council leaders in Gaza on February 19, according to a US official and diplomats from four council member states, through which it seeks to advance the implementation of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement and fundraise for reconstruction.
