Axios: The dismissal of the US Justice Secretary… The end of a turbulent period
US President Donald Trump’s dismissal of Justice Secretary Pam Bondi from her post on Thursday sparked a wave of comments about her performance during her time at the helm of the Justice Department, particularly her role in publishing the files of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was convicted of sex crimes.
While the Jeffrey Epstein controversy was a highlight of her tenure, it wasn’t the only event that brought her into the national spotlight, Axios reported.
Bondi’s departure has been expected for some time, as criticism has piled up from both parties, and after Democrats have threatened to impeach her, some conservatives have called for her to be fired, and multiple reports have indicated that President Donald Trump was ready to end her role in the government.
Trump wrote on Truth Social that Bondi is “a great American patriot and loyal friend, who has faithfully served as attorney general over the past year,” adding that she will move on to an important new job in the private sector.
During her tenure, Bondi became the most prominent face of the US government’s handling of the Epstein investigation files that Trump entrusted to fulfill his promise to publish.
Although the Justice Department was legally compelled to release millions of files related to Epstein in stages, it turned out that most of the files it published were withheld or contained previously published information, and Bondi made a mistake when she announced that Epstein’s client list was on her desk, before the Justice Department came back and asserted that such a list didn’t exist.
Elsewhere, three former FBI agents have filed a lawsuit against Bondi, the Justice Department and the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) after they were fired for their involvement in the investigation into Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Bondi has been pressured by Trump to prosecute his political opponents in a campaign described as a retaliation campaign involving figures such as former CIA Director James Comey, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, and Senator Adam Schiff, but these cases have so far had little success.
In a related context, Trump discussed the idea of firing Bondi due to his growing frustration with the performance of the Justice Department, especially regarding the Epstein files and the failure to prosecute his political opponents.
Lee Zeldin, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, who has previously described him as his secret weapon, is a former New York state lawmaker who has worked to ease environmental restrictions and repeal some protections in support of Trump’s policy of expanding oil extraction.
Bondi’s dismissal ended a turbulent 14-month tenure at the helm of the Justice Department, and Trump’s decision to fire her came after he expressed his displeasure with the way it handled the Jeffrey Epstein files and its failure to prosecute his political opponents in private sessions.
Trump announced that he would name Vice President Todd Blanche as her temporary replacement, writing, “We love Pam, and she will be moving on to an important new private sector job that will be announced soon”.
Bondi becomes the second member of the government to lose his position in weeks, following the dismissal of Homeland Security Minister Kristi Noem last month.
She has relinquished much of the department’s historic independence and oversaw the departure of a large number of experienced professional officials, weakening anti-corruption and national security units, as well as several local federal prosecutors’ offices, and leaving them in a state of frustration and retreat.
Still, Trump remained upset about her inability to formally indict people he had previously called “scum” during a speech in the Justice Department’s Great Hall nearly a year ago.
Trump’s support for Bondi has been gradually declining since last summer, when her early mistakes in managing the publication of the Epstein files caused him political embarrassment, especially among some of his supporters, and he criticized her media performance and considered her ineffective in defending him through the media.
Trump has publicly praised Bondi’s loyalty, reaching out to her several times a week to ask for advice or discuss ideas.
At the same time, he has been expressing his displeasure with her performance and increasingly listening to her critics within his own circle
In recent weeks, Trump has sent conflicting signals, publicly praising her loyalty and reaching out to her several times a week to ask for advice or discuss ideas, according to a person close to her.
At the same time, he has been expressing displeasure with its performance and increasingly listening to its critics within his own circle.
In a statement on social media, Bondi said she would support the transition of Todd Blanche (her interim vice president) over the next month, before moving to work in the private sector, adding that “leading President Trump’s historic and successful efforts to make America safer has been the honor of a lifetime, and without a doubt the most impactful first year in the history of the US Department of Justice”.
Bondi’s permanent successor is expected to face the difficult task of satisfying Trump’s desire for political revenge, which Bondi has tried by opening investigations, seeking charges against some of his opponents, and firing agents and lawyers who have been involved in cases involving the president.
