US president, Donald Trump and Iranian president Masoud Pezeshkian signed a memorandum of understanding to end the war; official ceremony on Friday in Switzerland.

The United States and Iran announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding that paves the way for ending the war between the two countries and halting military operations on various fronts, while Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that the official signing ceremony will take place on Friday in Switzerland with the participation of Pakistan and Qatar as mediators in the agreement.

Sharif said that the so-called “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding” represents a historic step towards ending the conflict, noting that the agreement entered into initial effect after being signed electronically by US President Donald Trump and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian.

According to the memorandum, the two sides agreed to cease military operations, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international navigation for 60 days without fees, and commence intensive negotiations to reach a final agreement within the same period.

The understandings also include a gradual easing of sanctions and allowing Iran to resume its oil exports, along with the establishment of a $300 billion reconstruction fund financed by international and private sources.

The memorandum stipulates Iran’s commitment not to develop or possess nuclear weapons, and to discuss a mechanism for dealing with the stockpile of enriched uranium under international supervision, while Washington pledges to work on gradually removing US and international sanctions if Tehran adheres to the terms of the agreement.

Despite the widespread international welcome for the agreement, Trump stressed that the current understanding is not a final agreement, warning that the United States will return to the military option if Iran doesn’t abide by its commitments.
