The New York Times: Trump’s true intentions towards Iran
The New York Times revealed that US President Donald Trump has told his advisers that if the diplomatic track with Iran over its nuclear program fails, he may consider implementing a broader military action in the coming months.
According to the report, the US administration is considering a pre-emptive strike to demonstrate the seriousness of US demands that Tehran give up its potential military nuclear capabilities.
The targets under investigation include nuclear sites, missile installations, as well as IRGC headquarters.
A negotiating meeting is scheduled to be held in Geneva between delegations from Washington and Tehran, in a last-ditch attempt to avoid a military confrontation.
However, informed sources indicated that Trump is evaluating multiple alternatives in case the negotiations stall.
At a meeting inside the White House, Trump discussed possible military plans in the presence of a number of senior officials, including Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as military and intelligence leaders.
There are mixed assessments of how effective airstrikes alone are in achieving major political goals inside Iran, especially with the complexity of the defense infrastructure and fortified facilities.
Options have previously been floated involving limited special operations to destroy deep underground facilities, but these scenarios have been described as high-risk and have been postponed for the time being.
