Hezbollah in Lebanon, has approved the resignation of the head of the Liaison and Coordination Unit, Wafiq Safa, in an unprecedented move within the party.

Safa submitted his resignation a while ago, before it was officially accepted after he adhered to it, without revealing the reasons.

Wafiq Safa is one of the prominent leaders of the Lebanese Hezbollah, born in 1960 in the town of Zabdeen in southern Lebanon, and joined the party early in the 1980s, specifically in 1984.

Since the early 1990s, he has headed the Liaison and Coordination Committee, an entity concerned with following up on the party’s political and security relations inside and outside Lebanon.

His name has emerged in a number of sensitive issues, whether in managing relations with various political and security parties or in indirect negotiations with Israel, especially in prisoner exchange cases, where he played a significant role in several previous deals.

One of the most prominent of these issues is the exchange deal brokered by Germany in 2008, during which the bodies of two Israeli soldiers who were in the hands of Hezbollah were handed over in exchange for Israel’s release of five Lebanese prisoners, including Samir Kuntar, in addition to the handing over of the remains of about 199 Lebanese and Palestinians.

The deal is linked to the July 2006 war, which erupted after the capture of the two Israeli soldiers, which was one of the main reasons for the escalation of the military confrontation between the two sides at the time.

He was also known as a link between Hezbollah and the Lebanese government institutions, in addition to his activity in internal and external files related to the political and security scene.

In 2024, Wafiq Safa survived an assassination attempt during Israeli raids that left people dead, wounded, and extensive damage.
