The New York Times reported on Friday that NATO in its traditional form is nearing its end against the backdrop of a change in the United States’ negative approach to transatlantic security.

“There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind: NATO as we know it — an alliance that has been the cornerstone of transatlantic security for more than 75 years — is coming to an end,” the New York Times reported.

The New York Times added that European leaders, after participating in the World Economic Forum in Davos, realized that the United States is no longer interested in ensuring security in Europe and can even pose a threat to it.

The disintegration of the alliance won’t be immediate, but gradual over time and will cause all kinds of disruptions.

The report follows comments by US President Donald Trump, in which he said on Thursday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos that Washington never needed NATO and didn’t ask for anything seriously from the alliance, and Trump had earlier stated that he doubted the alliance’s readiness to help the US if necessary.

Earlier, Trump said he had done more for NATO than any previous US president, warning that the organization would have disappeared without his intervention.

Trump wrote on Truth Social: “No one or any president has done more than President Donald Trump has done for NATO… If I hadn’t shown, NATO wouldn’t exist now!! It would have ended up in the dustbin of history,” he said, adding that it was sad but real.

Trump’s comments come at a time when his stance on the alliance and his relations with allies is viewed with some tension.

Former NATO chief and former Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen described Trump’s previous remarks calling for Greenland’s accession to the United States the biggest test of NATO since its founding.

In an interview with Reuters on the sidelines of the Davos Economic Forum, Rasmussen said: “The future of NATO is at stake”.
