White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller sparked controversy after stating that Greenland should be part of the United States, stressing that the future of the world’s largest island would not be militarily contested, because no one is going to fight Washington over it!

Miller’s comments came during an interview with CNN, in response to a question about a photo posted by his wife, Kitty Miller, on X, showing a map of Greenland covered in the US flag with the caption “Soon!”.

The post coincided with the announcement by the United States of the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his transfer to New York, which gave the photo a striking political dimension.

Miller said the stance has been a formal and consistent policy of the US government since the beginning of the current administration, and extends to former President Donald Trump’s tenure, adding that the president has been very clear, Greenland should be part of the United States.

He stressed that Washington would not resort to military action against Greenland, questioning the legal basis for giving Denmark control over the island, describing its status as a “Danish colony”.

Greenland’s accession to the United States is essential for the security of the Arctic and the protection of the interests of Washington and NATO, he said, stressing that this issue will be the focus of discussion with the international community.

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom, as well as Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, asserted that Greenland belongs to its people and that its future is decided by its people and Denmark alone.

A joint European statement said that any external attempt to undermine the status of the island is unacceptable, stressing respect for its sovereignty.

Greenland enjoys extensive self-government but remains a territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Frederiksen has previously warned that any US attempt to seize Greenland could mean the “end of NATO”, especially in light of the escalating international tensions following the recent US military operation in Venezuela.

Between Washington’s insistence and Europe’s rejection, the Greenland issue opens a new door to the geopolitical conflict in the Arctic, amid fears that the mineral-rich island could become a hotbed of international tension in the future.
