The Mexican president rules out US strikes against drug cartels on territory
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday President Donald Trump’s threat to launch US military strikes against drug cartels inside Mexico was out of the question.
She told a news conference in response to Trump’s warning that he would do whatever it takes, including strikes inside Mexico, the US’s main economic partner and ally, that won’t happen.
“We don’t want interference from any foreign government. There is cooperation and coordination, but not dependency”.
“The last time the United States intervened in Mexico, it took half of the territory,” she said, referring to the Mexican Revolution in the 19th century, adding, “We cannot allow interference”.
From his side, Trump has told reporters on Monday that he would order an attack on Mexico if necessary as part of his drug smuggling campaign.
Trump’s threat comes as the United States deploys an aircraft carrier and military forces near Venezuela to pressure leftist President Nicolás Maduro, accusing him of leading a drug cartel.
