The Guardian: The European Union remains the largest buyer of Russian gas

The Guardian newspaper, cited data from the European Energy Research Center, confirming that the European Union remains the largest buyer of Russian gas.

According to the center, between February 2022 and September 2025, the European Union imported nearly half of its liquefied natural gas needs from Russia.

It was followed by China and Japan, which purchased 22% and 18% of their needs from Russian exports, respectively.

The European Union was also the largest buyer of pipeline gas from Russia, importing about 35% of its needs, followed by China with 30% and Türkiye with 29%.

The Guardian confirmed that Hungary, Slovakia, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands are the most prominent buyers of Russian gas in the European Union.

By the end of 2024, Russian LNG supplies to the European Union will have increased by 21%, reaching a record high of 21.5 billion cubic meters.

In the first nine months of 2025, Russian gas flows to Europe fell by 7%, to nearly 15 billion cubic meters.

Meanwhile, Eurostat data indicates that the European Union’s total purchases of Russian gas from January to August increased by 8%, reaching €9.75 billion.

Specifically, the EU purchased €4.1 billion worth of Russian pipeline gas and €5.7 billion worth of liquefied natural gas.
