The German Foreign Intelligence Service (BND) is seeking to attract a new generation of young people to join it as intelligence agents by offering an innovative interactive experience via a video game.

At Gamescom, the world’s largest video game exhibition, held in Cologne, the agency unveiled its new game, “Legends of German Intelligence: Operation Black Box,” where visitors can test their skills at the agency’s booth.

The game takes place in a fictional country called “Petulan,” where the ruling regime develops a dangerous cyber program, and the player takes on the role of a secret spy sent to gather sensitive information and prevent an impending disaster.

The game requires high concentration and a strong memory, such as memorizing security codes to open doors and sneaking through a challenging military complex while avoiding reconnaissance drones.

The game’s heroine is supported by an experienced hacker and a geography expert during her mission.

According to the CIA, the game reflects real-life aspects of the agency’s work, allowing players to understand the challenges and skills required.

Although the game isn’t currently available for play at home, the agency plans to release it on digital platforms in the near future.

The agency’s spokesperson, Julia Lener, said that the BND, like any other employer, seeks to attract new talent, stressing that the agency’s booth at Gamescom and the game represent an effective way to reach young people interested in technology and intelligence missions.

She added that there’s a similar overlap between the traits of Gamescom attendees and potential agency employees, as both are adept at shifting roles, assuming multiple identities, engaging in complex tasks, and uncovering hidden relationships.

She concluded her remarks by denying rumors that applicants cannot apply for a job at the agency, stressing that the door is open to those interested and that the required skills are available to join.

It’s noteworthy that the German Foreign Intelligence Agency currently employs approximately 6,500 employees, distributed between its headquarters in Berlin and its centers in Bülach and other locations inside and outside Germany.
