German Chancellor: Putin-Zelensky meeting might take place by the end of August

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday evening that the results of the meeting held by European leaders with US President Donald Trump at the White House exceeded our expectations.

“The results of the meeting exceeded our expectations,” Mertz was quoted by Reuters as saying after the meeting, expressing his welcome for Trump’s announcement regarding security guarantees for Ukraine.

He continued, “All of Europe should participate in providing security guarantees for Ukraine”.

He explained: “Trump spoke with Putin and they agreed to hold a meeting between Putin and Zelensky within two weeks”.

He added, “This will be followed by a tripartite meeting attended by Trump”.

He also said on X, “It was a good meeting with President Trump, President Zelensky, and our European partners today in Washington, but the next steps will be more complex”.

He added, “We must put pressure on Russia. There must be a ceasefire before any further talks”.

On this regard, Axios website revealed, citing sources, that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky is expected to take place by the end of August.

For his part, Trump stated, “During the meeting, we discussed the security guarantees for Ukraine that various European countries will provide, in coordination with the United States”.

“Everyone is very happy about the possibility of achieving peace for Russia/Ukraine,” he continued.

He explained: “At the conclusion of the meetings, I called President Vladimir Putin, and arrangements began for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky… After this meeting, we will have a trilateral meeting, which will be between the two presidents, in addition to me”.
