Burkina Faso signs agreement with Russia to build nuclear power plant
Burkina Faso and Russia signed a joint agreement to build a peaceful nuclear power plant, on the sidelines of an international economic forum that concluded, Sunday, in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg.
The agreement was signed by Burkina Faso’s Minister of Energy and Mines, Yacoub Zabre Goba, and Rosatom CEO, Alexei Likhachev.
The Burkinabe minister considered the agreement a fundamental step in the administrative process toward building the station, noting that the Russian company will submit a technical and financial proposal for review by the Burkina Faso government before beginning technical and financial negotiations for the project’s implementation.
For its part, Rosatom announced its ability to build a nuclear power plant in Burkina Faso within five years, provided the necessary technical, regulatory, and human resources conditions are met.
Rosatom believes the project’s success will depend on Burkina Faso’s readiness in several areas, including human resources and infrastructure.
In July 2023, Burkina Faso’s transitional president, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, announced his country’s intention to cooperate with Russia to establish a peaceful nuclear power plant, with the aim of diversifying energy sources.
