US State Department spokesman Michael Mitchell revealed that President Donald Trump is preparing to issue executive orders to lift sanctions imposed on Syria, confirming that the process has reached its final legal and administrative stages.

Mitchell indicated that the Trump administration has become more aware of the impact of the sanctions on the Syrian people, which has prompted it to move toward lifting them with the aim of providing a real opportunity for a better future.

He explained that the process of lifting sanctions is proceeding along two legal paths.

According to him, the first concerns sanctions imposed by presidential executive orders and can be immediately revoked, while the second requires congressional intervention to address legislative sanctions.

Mitchell continued that the decision comes as part of a new vision to enhance security and stability in the region and prepare the ground for more positive relations with Damascus, noting that the ultimate goal is to reopen the US embassy in the Syrian capital.

He also noted that the recent meeting between Trump and the Syrian President, Ahmed al Sharaa, gave positive impetus to this process, expressing Washington’s hope to build a new partnership with the current Syrian government.
