Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has temporarily reversed its recent decision to classify the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party as an “extremist entity,” just days after announcing the controversial designation.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, a domestic intelligence agency, informed an administrative court in Cologne that it would temporarily suspend the designation pending the completion of ongoing legal proceedings.

This will reclassify the party as a suspected case, a lower classification that allows the office to continue monitoring it, but with strict judicial restrictions.

This sudden retreat came after the party filed an urgent appeal, accusing the previous government, led by Olaf Scholz, of waging a political smear campaign before leaving office.

The office didn’t provide any official explanation for this sudden shift in its position, according to its court filing.

The office’s original decision, based on a 1,100-page internal report by experts, was unprecedented in modern German history.

Never before has a party fully represented in the Bundestag been classified as a “confirmed extremist organization,” which would have opened the door to enhanced surveillance tools, including the recruitment of informants.
