The German Interior Ministry is seeking to negotiate with the new Syrian authorities with the aim of repatriating hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees residing in Germany.

According to a report published by the Bild newspaper, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser plans to visit Syria soon to discuss this issue with the new Syrian leadership.

A spokesperson for the German Interior Ministry indicated that the ministry is in contact with the transitional government in Syria, including discussing the issue of refugee repatriation, but declined to disclose details of the planned visit.

According to Bild newspaper, negotiations are underway for the return of approximately 974,000 Syrian refugees residing in Germany, a major challenge for German social funds.

Approximately 512,000 Syrians receive financial aid estimated at approximately €4 billion annually, as the average aid received by a Syrian refugee is approximately €664 per month.

According to data from the German Interior Ministry, approximately 975,000 Syrians currently reside in Germany, most of whom arrived after 2015 due to the war in Syria.

Among them, more than 300,000 are people with subsidiary protection, having been accepted for reasons related to the conflict in Syria rather than individual persecution.

In another development, Germany’s Federal Office for Migration decided to temporarily suspend asylum decisions for Syrians, raising questions about the German government’s stance toward future refugees.

After a stabbing incident in Berlin that injured a Spanish tourist, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser pledged to deport Syrians involved in violent crimes, expressing her shock at the attack, describing it as a “barbaric act,” stressing that the government won’t tolerate such crimes and will work to deport those involved to Syria.
