Axios: This is what Trump intends to do on his first day
President-elect Donald Trump is planning a stormy first day in the White House, with a series of decisions that will determine the course of his four-year term, according to Axios.
Trump and his team are preparing to launch a shock and awe campaign through executive orders that include an amnesty for the rioters who stormed the Capitol building on January 6, 2021, in addition to closing the southern border of the United States.
Trump also intends to reverse some decisions and laws passed by President Joe Biden, which will greatly affect large sectors of the US economy.
Based on a comprehensive analysis of Trump’s speeches and press conferences, his promises on the first day can be summarized under three main axes:
Immigration
has undoubtedly been one of the defining issues of Trump’s political identity.
With border crossings on the rise under Biden, Trump is planning to issue executive orders that include banning flights bringing in migrants and reinstating and expanding the travel ban on citizens of Muslim-majority countries.
He has also promised to abolish birthright citizenship, potentially setting up a constitutional clash over the 14th Amendment that could end up before the Supreme Court.
MAGA Movement
On the second axis, Trump seeks to please the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, as he plans to focus on the conservative cultural issues that have dominated the Republican Party in recent years.
These priorities include imposing a ban on diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government, as well as banning transgender people from participating in women’s sports.
Big Business and Economic Policy
The third axis concerns big business, as Trump reinforces the pro-business sentiment.
He has pledged to speed up the issuance of permits for drilling and fracking, as well as cut energy prices by 50% for a year.
He also plans to end electric vehicle subsidies and roll back Biden’s emissions standards.
He will also impose sanctions on Iran and pursue action against future US administrations that open borders.
As part of the protectionist policy, Trump seeks to impose comprehensive customs duties on US trading partners.
However, Axios noted that many of these promises require congressional approval, and that some may be exaggerated, as Trump himself has acknowledged.
He also downplayed his promise to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours, suggesting that achieving peace in Ukraine may be harder than ending the war between Israel and Hamas.
