The European Union and Washington suspend punitive tariffs
The European Union and the United States decided on Tuesday to suspend reciprocal punitive customs duties related to the dispute between Airbus and Boeing for another 5 years, according to European media.
This came in conjunction with the start of a meeting between US President Joe Biden and European Union leaders in the Belgian capital, Brussels, according to “Euronews” website, quoting unnamed sources.
The sources indicated that Biden is seeking to calm trade tensions with European allies before his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday in Geneva.
The European Union and the United States are scheduled to announce, later on Tuesday, the extension of the suspension of customs duties scheduled in early March, to resolve a 17-year dispute over illegal subsidies granted to Airbus and Boeing groups, according to the same source.
In this context, Biden met on Tuesday with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der in an attempt by his administration to win back European support in order to face the challenges posed by Russia and China.
