On Monday, a cyber-attacks targeted some of the largest US airports, originating from inside Russia, according to what ABC News quoted an informed person as saying.

The source said that the attacks resulted in “blocking public access” to websites that report waiting times and crowding at the airport, describing the matter as annoying.

The source emphasized that the targeted systems don’t deal with air traffic control, internal communications and coordination of airlines, or transportation security.

US Federal agencies first saw the attacks around 3:00 am ET (08:00 GMT), when the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency was informed that the LaGuardia airport system had been targeted.

The system was restored at LaGuardia Airport, but the attacks targeted other airports across the country later, according to the network.

The websites of Des Moines International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport were affected Monday morning.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport reported at about 10:30 am EDT that its site was working again, noting that this attack didn’t result in any operational disruptions inside the airport.

Engineers and programmers are actively working to close the backdoors that allowed the attacks and support the most critical computing infrastructure, according to ABC News.

The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency have confirmed that they are aware of the attacks.
