Türkiye and the UK sign multi-billion-pound air defense deal

The United Kingdom and Türkiye have deepened their defense cooperation by signing a multi-billion-pound agreement focused on training and long-term operational support tied to Ankara’s planned acquisition of Typhoon fighter jets.

According to a statement from the UK Defense Department, the newly concluded contract will provide comprehensive training programs in the UK for Turkish pilots, engineers, and ground crew.

The initiative is designed to prepare Türkiye’s armed forces for the integration and operation of the advanced combat aircraft, which form part of a broader £8 billion ($10.73 billion) defense package agreed between the two countries last year.

Defense officials say the training will cover flight operations, maintenance procedures, mission planning, and logistics management, ensuring that Turkish personnel can rapidly achieve operational readiness once the first batch of jets is delivered.

The program will also involve simulator-based training and joint exercises with British units to strengthen interoperability between NATO allies.

The Typhoon deal is seen as a strategic step for Ankara as it seeks to modernize its air force fleet amid evolving regional security dynamics.

For London, the agreement reinforces the UK’s position as a leading exporter of high-technology defense systems and supports thousands of jobs across the country’s aerospace sector.

Industry sources indicate that British defense companies, including major contractors involved in Typhoon production and support are expected to play a central role in delivering training infrastructure, technical assistance, and lifecycle support services under the new contract.
