Turkish Defense Minister: We’re ready to resume negotiations with Damascus

Turkish Minister of National Defense, Yaşar Güler, announced Türkiye’s readiness to resume negotiations between its defense ministers, Russia, Syria, and Iran.
Güler stated that Türkiye is always ready for dialogue and discussion, and pointed out that the Syrian side’s demands are not immediately acceptable, as the Syrian side seeks Türkiye’s departure.
At the same time, Güler highlighted that Türkiye seeks to maintain its presence in the areas where it works to achieve stability and security, and said, “But why should Türkiye leave?”
Güler also stressed that the Syrian side doesn’t have enough time to deal with some of the areas that were secured by Türkiye in order to achieve peace and security.
He stressed the importance of confronting those who extract and sell their people’s oil.
Last December, the first negotiations took place in Russia between the defense ministers of Türkiye and Syria in 11 years, as the Syrian crisis began in 2011.
Since then, Türkiye has sided with opponents of Syrian President Bashar al Assad, and relations between the two countries have remained complex, however recently, both sides have begun talking about the possibility of gradual normalization.
