The US Central Command, in cooperation with the Syrian Ministry of Interior, announced the destruction of more than 15 sites containing weapons caches belonging to the Islamic State (IS) in southern Syria from November 24 to 27.

According to the statement, US military personnel from the Joint Task Force – Operation Fixed Resolve (CJTF-OIR) worked with Syrian forces in identifying and eliminating the group’s weapons storage facilities across the Damascus countryside governorate, through a series of airstrikes and ground bombings.

The joint operation resulted in the destruction of more than 130 mortars, rockets, multiple assault rifles, machine guns, anti-tank mines, materials for the construction of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and quantities of narcotics.

Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command, said: “This successful operation ensures that the gains against ISIS are permanent, and that the group is unable to regenerate or export terrorist attacks home to the United States and around the world”.

Established by US Central Command in 2014, the Joint Task Force – Operation Steadfast Resolve provides advice and assistance to partner forces in the fight against ISIS, and the terrorist group’s traditional threat has deteriorated since its regional defeat in 2019, as the terrorist group’s fighters dispersed.

“We’ll remain vigilant and continue to vigorously pursue ISIS remnants in Syria,” Cooper said, stressing that efforts will continue to confront the terrorist threat in the region.
