The Syrian President will visit Germany on Monday

After months of postponing, Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa is expected to arrive in Berlin on Monday, after abruptly postponing his earlier planned visit amid heightened tensions at home.

The visit comes at the invitation of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with talks anticipated to address a range of highly sensitive issues, most prominently the future of Syrian refugees residing in Germany.

Diplomatic sources suggest that migration policy will be a central theme of the discussions, particularly in light of ongoing debates within Germany and across Europe about voluntary return programs, integration frameworks, and the legal status of displaced Syrians.

At the same time, both sides are expected to explore broader cooperation mechanisms tied to humanitarian assistance and reconstruction initiatives in war-affected regions of Syria.

The visit had originally been scheduled earlier this year but was postponed due to developments in Syria’s internal situation, including a surge in military tensions that raised concerns about political stability and security guarantees.

Observers note that the timing of the rescheduled trip reflects renewed efforts by Damascus to re-engage with European capitals and reposition itself diplomatically after years of strained relations.

Although the official program has not yet been publicly confirmed, analysts expect the agenda to include meetings with senior government officials, potential engagements with parliamentary representatives, and closed-door consultations on security coordination.

The trip is widely viewed as part of a cautious but notable attempt to redraw the contours of Syria–Europe relations, with thorny dossiers such as migration management, economic recovery, sanctions policy, and regional stability likely to dominate the discussions.
