Steve Witkoff meets with Zelensky and European leaders in Berlin to discuss US initiative to end Ukraine war
US President’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and a number of European leaders in Berlin this weekend, seeking to resume efforts to end the Ukraine war.
The German government has announced that Berlin will host the leaders, including the president of the European Commission and the secretary general of NATO, next Monday after Zelensky attended the German-Ukrainian business forum accompanied by Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Ukrainian officials said they recently sent Washington an updated plan based on Trump’s original 28-point proposal to end the war, which began in February 2022.
Trump’s plan, unveiled last month, has been accused of reflecting Moscow’s key demands, including Ukraine’s ceding vital territory to Russia.
The idea of Ukraine’s swift accession to the European Union, a move Moscow opposes, is included in the latest version of the US plan.
According to a senior source, Ukraine would join the European Union as early as January 2027 under the latest US plan.
Meanwhile, Europeans and Ukrainians are demanding that the United States provide them with security guarantees before Ukraine negotiates any territorial concessions, the French presidency said on Friday.
