The Egyptian presidency announced on Monday that President Abdel Fattah al Sisi has decided to award his US counterpart Donald Trump the “the Order of the Nile,” the country’s highest honor, for “his role in stopping the Gaza war”.

This came in a presidential statement ahead of the launch of the Sharm al Sheikh Peace Summit on Monday afternoon, chaired by Sisi and Trump, and attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and leaders and officials from around the world.

The Egyptian presidency said: “President Abdel Fattah el Sisi has decided to award President Donald Trump, President of the United States of America, the Order of the Nile”.

Sisi’s decision to award Trump the medal came in appreciation of his outstanding contributions to supporting peace efforts and defusing conflicts, most recently his pivotal role in stopping the war in Gaza.

The Sharm el Sheikh International Summit aims to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and open a new chapter in regional security and stability.

The summit comes after the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel went into effect on Friday afternoon, after being approved by the Israeli government at dawn the same day.

On October 9, Trump announced that Israel and Hamas had reached an agreement on the first phase of his ceasefire and prisoner exchange plan, following indirect negotiations between the two sides in Sharm el Sheikh, with the participation of Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar, and under US supervision.
