Russia has officially opened its embassy in Burkina Faso on Thursday, which is a step that reflects the new rapprochement between the two countries, after tense relations between Ouagadougou and Paris.

The Russian ambassador to Ivory Coast, Alexei Saltykov, who will work as ambassador to Burkina Faso until a new ambassador is appointed, visited Ouagadougou on Wednesday, where he was received by the country’s Foreign Minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré.

The two sides considered, according to what was reported by local Burkinabe media, that opening an embassy in Moscow, Ouagadougou, reflects the desire of the two countries to strengthen cooperation between them, and that this cooperation is on the right path.

According to sources in Moscow, the Russian diplomat Alexei Saltykov will hold, with the participation of officials from Burkina Faso, representatives of the diplomatic corps of friendly countries, the media and citizens, an official ceremony on the occasion of the reopening of the embassy in Ouagadougou on December 28.

Last August, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin signed two decrees to reopen the Russian embassies in Equatorial Guinea and Burkina Faso during the year 2023.

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed during the Russian-African summit held in St. Petersburg last July with the participation of Burkinabe interim president Captain Ibrahim Traoré, that the reopening of the Russian embassies in Burkina Faso and Equatorial Guinea will be a real practical step to significantly enhance cooperation with African countries in the political, economic, humanitarian, cultural and touristic.
