Niger: The Military Council announces the review of all agreements with all partners

The ruling military junta in Niger announced that it will review all agreements signed in the past with all partners, a few days after the complete withdrawal of French forces from the country at the invitation of the new authorities.

A memorandum issued by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, addressed to diplomatic missions accredited in Niamey, explained that a draft new agreement protocol would be submitted to its countries.

The memorandum explained that the goal of reviewing the agreements is to infuse a new dynamic in bilateral cooperation, without specifying whether the decision concerns all countries or is limited to those that have forces in Niger.

The United States, which has 1,300 soldiers in the country, had previously announced its desire for its forces to remain there, and the same position was also expressed by Germany, which has 100 soldiers in Niger.

Since the National Council for the Protection of the Fatherland, headed by General Abderrahmane Tiani, came to power following a military coup that overthrew elected President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, the new military authorities say that they are firmly committed to affirming the country’s sovereignty and defending its interests.
