Israel Defense: Egypt is conducting advanced negotiations with Spain to buy F-110 class frigates for the Egyptian Navy
The Israeli military magazine “Israel Defense” revealed that Egypt is conducting advanced negotiations with Spain to buy F-110 frigates for the Egyptian navy.
The Israeli military magazine revealed based on military and intelligence sources, that the Egyptian navy is currently the largest in the Arab world and Africa, and includes about 150 diverse naval units, including submarines, surface ships, amphibious landing units, and patrol and logistical vessels.
According to the magazine, official negotiations have begun between representatives of the Egyptian military and the Spanish shipbuilding company NAVANTIA, with the aim of completing a deal in line with Egypt’s strategy to modernize naval capabilities.
Israel Defense Magazine stressed that Cairo requires the involvement of local industries in the project, through:
- Partial manufacturing in Egypt;
- Transfer of Advanced Technologies to the Alexandria Shipyards and the Arab Organization of Military Industries;
This approach is in line with Egypt’s policy for years aimed at reducing dependence on external sources and building independent domestic defense capabilities.
According to the report, the F-110 frigate is the latest currently produced by Spain and is designed as a multi-mission platform, focusing on: Anti-submarine warfare, dealing with aerial and surface threats.
It features advanced technical specifications:
- Displacement: About 6100 tons
- Length: 145 meters
- Propulsion System: Hybrid (Diesel + Electric + Gas)
- Maximum speed: 35 knots
- Crew: 150
- Continuous cruising time: Up to 240 days without docking
Spain is currently building five such units for its navy, making a potential deal with Egypt of strategic dimension for both parties.
Israel Defense Magazine stressed that Egypt’s geostrategic location — bordering the Mediterranean and Red Seas, which is directly responsible for operating the Suez Canal — makes strengthening naval capabilities a top defense priority in its future plans.
Egypt has submitted its official request for the purchase of a frigate set of this type in 2025, and since then there have been ongoing technical and strategic discussions between the two sides, while Israel is eagerly awaiting this deal, as an indication of Egypt’s growing military capabilities and its potential impact on the regional balance.
