Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said on Sunday that the autonomous region of Greenland in the Scandinavian country is facing a defining moment as US President Donald Trump seeks to annex the island.

During a discussion with leaders of other Danish parties, Frederiksen said: “There is a dispute over Greenland… It’s a defining moment, it’s beyond the obvious”.

Frederiksen announced earlier this week that a US attack on a NATO member would mean “the end of everything,” especially NATO and the security system that has existed since the end of World War II.

For Trump, Washington’s control of this resource-rich Arctic island is critical to US national security, given the growing threat posed by Russia and China in the Arctic.

In an interview with The New York Times on Thursday, Trump acknowledged that he may have to choose between maintaining NATO unity or controlling Danish territory.

In a message on Facebook and Instagram, Frederiksen said: “Denmark is a loyal and steadfast ally… We’re undertaking a large-scale rearmament, and we are ready to defend our values wherever necessary, including in the Arctic”.

“We believe in international law and the right of peoples to self-determination, and therefore we defend the principles of sovereignty, self-determination and territorial integrity,” she said.

Greenlanders have repeatedly reiterated their refusal to join the United States, as according to a poll published by the Greenland newspaper Sermetsiak in January 2025, 85% of island residents expressed opposition to joining the United States in the future, while only 6% supported the move.
