Russian sources confirmed that the visit of Russian Deputy Defense Minister Yunusbek Yevkurov, commander of the Africa Corps, to Damascus came more than just discussing understandings and security guarantees in southern Syria.

The sources indicated that the purpose of the visit is to ensure logistical support for Russian military and economic activities in Africa, which are linked to the Hmeimim naval bases in Latakia and Tartus.

Talks between Damascus and Moscow are focused on comprehensively redrawing the features of Russia’s positioning in Syria, in a way that determines the nature of the new relationship and the arrangements for the Russian military presence on pragmatic foundations that take into account the interests of both parties.

Moscow is discussing with Damascus arrangements for the redeployment of Russian military police units in southern Syria, with the aim of withdrawing pretexts from Israel, which has controlled large areas in the Damascus countryside, Quneitra and Daraa, and the resulting threat to the lives of civilians and the arrest of dozens of them.

In related context, a Russian military delegation, accompanied by officers and members of the Syrian Ministries of Defense and Interior, carried out a field tour on Monday in the countryside of Quneitra.

The military delegation from Damascus arrived in Quneitra province, including Russian and Turkish personnel, as the delegation passed through the city of Nawa in the western countryside of Daraa before heading towards Quneitra, accompanied by internal security forces and military police.
