Daily Mail: Trump promises every citizen of Greenland $1 million if the vote in favor of joining the US
US President Donald Trump is considering a financial initiative that includes giving $1 million to every citizen of Greenland, if residents vote in favor of joining the United States.
The Daily Mail newspaper quoted in a report published on Thursday that the proposal under consideration includes the island’s 57,000 residents, as part of a US effort to persuade them to change the political status of the region.
Trump said he wanted to hold close meetings to discuss Greenland’s future, stressing during a speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos on Wednesday that he had no intention of using force to annex the island, but stressed that Washington believes it has the right to claim it.
He added that simply leasing Greenland wouldn’t allow the United States to defend it as required.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen commented on the remarks, saying that the ruling out of the use of force is a positive sign, but that US ambitions on the island remain unworkable.
Rasmussen made it clear that Copenhagen couldn’t meet Trump’s demands, despite his less escalating tone on the issue.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but the US president has repeatedly called for its annexation to the United States, stressing its strategic importance to US national security, and stressing that his country is the only one capable of providing the necessary protection for the island.
